True Carnivore Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) Beating His Meat Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) tenderizes the living s*** out of some meat in Rocky (1976).

“If you just decide ‘I’m going to go on the Carnivore Diet for the next thirty days starting right now’ and just count down your calendar starting right now, you’ll lose weight and feel amazing. I just don’t know if it’s a way to eat all the time.”

- Joe Rogan, 2020

Trendy diets that come in all shapes and sizes have been with us for a hot minute. That being said, we’ll be the first to admit that when we first caught wind of The Carnivore Diet at Gallantry HQ, the idea of unleashing our inner-omnivore by eating grass-fed, pasture-raised steak all the time, immediately, how shall we say, struck a cord with us. Had we discovered the most Gallantry Man diet (or, as some might refer to it, “anti-diet”) of all-time? Suffice to say, we had to find out more.

The Old '96er from The Great OutdoorsThe Old ‘96er from The Great Outdoors (1988)

The Carnivore Diet has a number of variations but it essentially emphasizes eating nothing but meat (the more organ meats – liver, kidney, heart, lungs - the better) and drinking nothing but water. Championed at various times by the likes of rumored Gallantry Man Joe “I’m Onnit!” Rogan , Dr. Jordan Peterson , Mikhaila Peterson , Dr. Shawn Baker, Dr. Rhonda Patrick , Dr. Paul Saladino (who has, admittedly, made alterations to his iteration of the diet over time), and countless others, going carnivore is an idea that has seen its popularity absolutely skyrocket in recent years.

Frying A Steak like a True Carnivore in Goodfellas
“Hey, how do you like yours? Medium-rare, huh? An aristocrat.”
- Johnny Dio (Frank Pellegrino), Goodfellas (1990)

Unlike other low-carb or carb-limiting diets such as Keto (the ketogenic diet emphasizes eating very few carbs and lots of high-fat protein in order to put your body in a state of ketosis so that it burns fat faster and more efficiently), the full-blown Carnivore regimen eliminates carbs, plant-based foods (i.e. veggies), sugar, spices, gluten, dairy, fruit, additives, bread, nuts, seeds, and legumes from your diet altogether. Like any diet, results vary, but its followers and practicioners have claimed that going carnivore has helped them lose weight, reverse autoimmune disease/reduce inflammation (Joe Rogan has himself said that going carnivore for periods of time have helped him reverse his vitiligo), increase testosterone levels, minimize appetite, eliminate depression and anxiety, regulate hormone levels and blood sugar levels, sharpen mental acuity, boost energy levels, and more.

A big inflection point for The Carnivore Diet came when Jordan Peterson appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2018. It’s often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and, as such, Rogan immediately inquired Dr. Peterson as to what he had been doing differently in his life, as he looked younger and slimmer than he had in previous visits. Peterson explained to Rogan that he had adopted a Carnivore Diet consisting solely of beef, salt, and water after seeing his daughter Mikhaila’s astonishing success with it (it helped her lose weight, eliminate depression, and seriously reverse her chronic arthritis) and that he himself had achieved similar successful results (including weight-loss, glowing skin, psoriasis relief, and dramatically diminished depression/anxiety).

Like any dramatic lifestyle alteration, you should do your own research before deciding to go full carnivore. It certainly has its fair share of both critics and champions.

Everyone is different. While many have had astonishing success with The Carnivore Diet, others haven’t. What works for this guy, like many things, may not work for that guy. Capisce? Hey, who are we kidding? Of course you capisce, you legend you.

Here’s the thing, though. There’s no hard and fast rule saying that you have to do The Carnivore Diet for x amount of time. If you’re really interested in it, perhaps the move is to try it out for a week first to see how your body reacts to it. Then, from there, you can decide how far you want to go with the whole shebang. Discussing the diet with your physician and getting blood work done beforehand also seem like solid ideas.

Jon Favreau going Carnivore with a nice slab of brisket in ChefSwingers legend Jon Favreau gets real carnivore with it with a nice slab of brisket in his 2014 flick Chef. He’s growns up, growns up, and he’s growns up!

Whether or not you decide to go full carnivore aside, how you treat your steak says a lot about you. Do you just eat a beautiful ribeye with your hands like it’s Medieval Times? Of course not! You cut and carve that gorgous slab of cow with class, baby! After all, no one wants to go through life like tearing their meat like a chump when enjoying a delicious steak, a cornerstone of the Gallantry Man diet. For this reason, we recommend the following everyday carry blades for cutting beef like a boss…
