JOHNNY KNOXVILLE: OUR JACKASS FOREVER

Someone wrote it was the last one, but we never said it was the last one. I mean, it could go on…we could do another one if we wanted. I don’t know if we want to, but we could let the old guys come in and have fun, but put it more on the young cast. I don’t know. After [the first two films], we’re like ‘Never.’ And then there we made a third one and now we make a fourth one. So, we’re never saying never.

The movie business is in complete disarray these days (and that’s an understatement). Nevertheless, just when you thought it was curtains for good, Paramount comes along and drops Jackass Forever (watch the trailer HERE starring by actor, professional envelope pusher, and stuntman heir to Evel Knievel Johnny Knoxville (born Philip John Clapp) and totally punks the competition. The movie (the fifth Jackass movie if you include Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa) grossed $23.5 million during its February 4^th opening weekend (made on a $10 million budget, it has grossed $47,451,591 worldwide to date). In this day and age, that’s more than you might initially think.

Turns out this mischievous 22-year old reality brand still has some juice left in its tank!

To understand this renewed interest in Jackass (brought on by the release of Jackass Forever), one merely needs to revisit Knoxville’s origin story, which not only resulted in one of the biggest out-of-left-field 21^st century pop culture surprise success stories, but also Johnny Knoxville’s unexpected rise to stardom (including some of his more iconic roles).

In the late 1990’s, Knoxville was just a Tennessee transplant trying to make it as an actor in Hollywood. Frustrated by his inability to catch a break, he began to channel his dad (“a salesman with a huge personality who loved nothing than to stir a bunch of trouble up”) during auditions, doing crazy stunts as a way to stand out. Come hell or high water, this man was going to get that brass ring. Before long, some pretty big time folks began to take notice of Knoxville’s Wildman shtick, including filmmaker Spike Jonze, who immediately began co-creating the American comedy reality series Jackass with Knoxville as a star vehicle for Knoxville’s daredevil antics.

Jackass finally debuted on MTV in October of 2000. The rest, as they say, is history.

No one knew what the heck to expect when Jackass first came out. Sure, there had always been prank projects, but Americans had never seen anything on the scale of Jackass. This was an era before YouTube, smartphones, and the explosion of reality television, after all. If you had told the people originally involved with the Jackass series (you can watch some of the best moments from HERE) back then that the show would not only air for three seasons, but also that it would become a massive blockbuster movie franchise (forget launching countless spin-off properties including Viva La Bam, Wildboyz, Homewrecker, Bam’s Unholy Union, Dr. Steve-O, Bam’s World Domination, and Bam’s Badass Game Show, not to mention a Jackass video game), they probably would have told you that you sounded nuts.

Alas, here we are, still talking about it.

There had just never been anything like the quintessentially American Jackass, well, before Jackass. Gallantry Men everywhere loved (and continue to love) watching this motley crew of absolutely fearless, ballbusting, wild, and hilarious Gallantry Men performing completely committed stunts and pranks on each other (or, in some cases, the public), willing to endure any accompanying physical pain or humiliation along the way.

Sure, there were plenty of naysayers and haters along the way, but from Jackass: The Movie (watch the trailer for the flick, which grossed nearly 80 million domestically on a $5 million budget, HERE) in 2002, to Jackass Number Two (watch the trailer for the flick, which grossed nearly $85 million worldwide on a $11,500,000 budget, HERE), to Jackass 3D (watch the trailer for the flick, which grossed $171,685,792 worldwide on a $20,000,000 budget, HERE), and even Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (watch the trailer for the flick, which grossed $151,826,547 on a $15,000,000 budget, HERE), this is one franchise has proven itself to be quite the lucrative property for over two decades running.

As for Johnny Knoxville’s acting career? Hey, he went on to star in a bunch of big movies like Men in Black II (2002), Walking Tall (2004), The Dukes of Hazzard (2005), The Last Stand (2013), and more.

For a guy from Tennessee with nothing but a dream, Knoxville, today a father of three, has done quite alright for himself. On the other hand, it’s also nothing short of a miracle that the Gallantry Man Legend is even still alive and kicking.

This is a man, after all, who broke ribs, his wrist, and suffered brain hemorrhage while shooting the last Jackass alone.

This is a man, after all, who literally broke his penis (or, as he calls it, his ‘gym dog’) in 2007 after trying to flip a motorcycle, an injury that left him with a catheter for nearly four years. As Knoxville recalls the incident:

So much has been said about so little. The doctor said a couple centimeters down and it would’ve been out of commission. But I’ve had two children since then, so it’s in great working order. That’s too much information.

If that’s not indicative of some serious dedication to one’s art, we’ll be damned if we know what is.

“JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS OUT, THEY PULL ME BACK IN!”

The most famous line uttered by Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in The Godfather Part III (1990) is also the most apropos to describe Knoxville’s continued involvement with Jackass. Jackass has become the man’s life-defining franchise. That’s why no matter how many times Knoxville claims the franchise is winding down (with a wink and a grin, of course), Knoxville, who has never seen himself as a brand or a businessman (as he puts it, “I’m more into creating”), keeps returning to his original baby that launched him into the cultural zeitgeist forever.

Even after over twenty years of Jackass shows, movies, and spin-offs, Knoxville’s most iconic role is still his greatest. Yes, the man is a ringleader and a showman through and through.
