Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 -Yellowstone Creator Taylor Sheridan 1

Ranching has been a part of my family for generations. It was something that my parents felt was important for us to be involved in. And I look to the lessons that I learned there, and they inform decisions that I make in the stories that I tell. It’s the world I know. Every great storyteller told stories in the world that they know … The cowboy way of life is built on help from others. I don’t try to create dramatic stories or dramatic characters. I try to create real scenarios based on people who I’ve known, or who I’ve imagined, and then I hold a mirror up to that world. And I believe that if I make something look real, it will be dramatic, because life is dramatic.

- Yellowstone Creator Taylor Sheridan, “The Cowboy Way of Life”

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Yellowstone National Park 2

THE PLACE BEHIND THE SHOW

Yellowstone National Park, baby.

America’s first national park, which paved the way for other national parks to be established across the U.S., just turned 150.

The 2.2 million acres of beautiful Yellowstone National Park land that spans Wyoming, Idaho, and, of course, Montana – is visited by millions each and every year. In fact, a record 4.8 million visitors ventured to Yellowstone in 2021 alone.

Could this have something to do with Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone ?

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 -Yellowstone 3

THE SHOW

Whether you’re completely unaware of the show or you are its biggest fan, Paramount Network’s drama series Yellowstone, created by John Linson and Gallantry Man Legend Taylor Sheridan (screenwriter of Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River), arguably the best writer working today, has quietly become the most popular series in the country. Given the greatest show on television’s sharp storytelling, beautiful, crisp Montana setting, and incredible characters, its due success is a resounding testament to quality ultimately prevailing.

We dig that.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 -Kayce Dutton 4

"Soldiers don’t tell war stories anymore, dad, because wars these days, it’s just about trying to live through them."

- Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes)

If you dig outlaws and cowboys, trust us, you’ll love yourself some good ol’ Yellowstone.

Like The Sopranos, Yellowstone is first and foremost a show about family, specifically The Dutton Family. For patriarch John Dutton (Oscar® and Emmy® winner Kevin Costner), the 6th-generation Yellowstone-Dutton Ranch in Montana (also known as “The Yellowstone,” it is the largest contiguous ranch in the entire country, “the size of Rhode Island”), is everything – and it is his family. As such, the land, as well as he and those who stand to inherit it, are under constant scrutiny and attack. However, if you think John Dutton won’t defend it by any means necessary from radical neighboring Indian reservations, greedy big city land developers, corrupt politicians and central planners, cutthroat casino owners, disrespectful bikers, and other assorted unsavory types, well, think again.

John Dutton is The Yellowstone and The Yellowstone is his Alamo.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Yellowstone 5John flashes a smile next to frenemies Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), Chief of the nearby fictional Broken Rock Indian Reservation, and Mo (Moses Brings Plenty), Chief Rainwater's driver, and bodyguard.

Then, of course, John has got his immediate family to deal with. If you can imagine Shakespeare’s King Lear set in the heartland, you’ve got yourself a good idea of the truly captivating, brutal, and often times violent narrative that undergirds Yellowstone.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Yellowstone 6

“Taylor has created a cinematic experience that our remarkable cast led by Kevin Costner brings to life in a way audiences can’t get enough of and we are excited to deepen our relationship with him and capitalize on this tremendous momentum by building out the ‘Yellowstone’ franchise together.”

- ViacomCBS CEO Chris McCarthy, Deadline

WHY YELLOWSTONE HITS: AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM

In today’s crowded content marketplace, a show has to really stand out to break through, captivate, and strike a cord with audiences.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Yellowstone Taylor Sheridan 7The creator of Yellowstone, Texan Taylor Sheridan, also shows up from time-to-time on the show as Travis Wheatly, Road House -lover and horse trading friend of John Dutton.

Yellowstone , in a way that is unlike any other show around at the moment, truly has something to say about America right now. Not yesterday, not several decades ago, but right now. Its authenticity and grit, not to mention its focus on rural and small business America, makes it a true force to be reckoned with.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Beth Dutton 8

“That’s the role of storyteller… We are, basically, the mirror of the days we live in, if we are getting it right.”

- Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton), UPI

Though the show took a few seasons to peak and completely catch the zeitgeist by fire (its devoted viewership rose via rural and smaller urban markets, places where cable still reigns supreme over streaming), by its 2021 4th season premiere, Yellowstone had become the record-breaking number 1 show on television. More than 14 million viewers of all ages tuned in, making the 4th season premiere the most watched original telecast on basic cable since November 2018 (not to mention the most-watched premiere on broadcast or cable since the 2017 premiere of The Walking Dead).

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Yellowstone Taylor Sheridan 9

“I don’t know if it’s a uniquely American fear or just a human fear: the fear that a way of life is ending… I think it’s a massive theme, this fear of losing someone that you love or a place that you love. That’s pretty universal.”

- Taylor Sheridan, The New York Times

Creating a realistic neo-Western set in present-day Big Sky Country (where the show is filmed on-location) is no easy feat in today’s cultural climate, but Yellowstone creator, writer, director (and actor) Taylor Sheridan is a Gallantry Man Legend on a mission – and you better believe that he’s got a lot to say about the America’s history as well as the current state of affairs.

“I don’t care if critics hate it and I don’t care if they like it. I’m not resentful. I just simply do not care. I’m not making it for them; I’m making it for people who live that life. The audience has expanded beyond that because, you know, a lot of people love westerns.”

- Taylor Sheridan, The New York Times

The Western is a uniquely American genre because the frontier will always be a defining characteristic of the country’s history, Manifest Destiny, and, of course, The American Dream. The Dutton’s just want to preserve a simple way of life, the way of life that America was built for, even if the powers that be are going to try and take it from them every step along the way.

The central family of Yellowstone isn’t just fodder for internal and external conflict. It is a metaphor for America, a country fighting tooth and nail to preserve itself. In other words, critics may ignore Yellowstone, the most popular series across broadcast, cable, and premium, but its audience isn’t going anywhere.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 -Yellowstone 10

“It doesn’t matter where you sit, on the coasts or in middle America, [ Yellowstone is] about protection of your family.”

- Yellowstone Executive Producer David Glasser, Wall Street Journal

MEET THE DUTTONS

**WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD**

Film is a director’s medium. Television is a writer’s medium. That’s why when it comes to a television series, audiences don’t stick around just for the story. They stick around for the characters. In the case of Yellowstone, these characters would be those who comprise The Dutton Family.

Let’s take a gander at these folks, shall we?

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - John Dutton 11

You don’t see it on your way to work, through the fields, or on the mountain, but there is a war being waged against our way of life. They’ll tell you all the reasons why our way of life is bad for Montana, bad for this country, bad for our future, how it’s immoral that you live here, walk here, grow your food here. They will tell it to you so much that you might even start to believe it yourself, question what you do and who you are. They’ll tell you that the land’s only hope is for them to be its steward. The ugly truth is that they want the land, and, if they get it, it will never look like our land again. That is progress in today’s terms. So if it’s progress you seek, do not vote for me. I am the opposite of progress. I am the wall that it bashes against, and I will not be the one who breaks.

- John Dutton (Kevin Costner)

JOHN DUTTON

John Dutton III (Gallantry Man Legend Kevin Costner) is the patriarch of The Dutton Family, the Tony Soprano of the Montana, a complicated, vengeful anti-hero who can be alternately warm and vicious, a man not at odds with getting his hands dirty and using brutality in order to defend his land, his history, and his loved ones. Imperfect as he may be, he’s one rough, tough-as-nails, and resilient rancher, which makes him perfect for the part of Manifest Destiny bodyguard.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Josh Lucas 12Josh Lucas as the younger, more affable John Dutton (seen via flashbacks).

Kevin Costner has been the man on the acting front since the 80’s, but the Gallantry Man Legend was truly born to play the role of John Dutton. Age has done Costner well, and in Yellowstone he carries himself with the hard-earned How the West Was Won wisdom of John Wayne.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - John Dutton 13

"Words are weapons now. I need you to learn how to use them."

- John Dutton

Watch Creator Taylor Sheridan, star Kevin Costner and the rest of the cast of Yellowstone talk about telling the modern Western story that is Yellowstone HERE.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 -Evelyn Dutton 14Gretchen Mol as Evelyn Dutton, John’s late wife and mother of Lee, Jamie, Beth, and Kayce.

EVELYN DUTTON (DECEASED)

The presence of Evelyn Dutton, John’s late wife who died in front of her children in a horse-riding accident in the late 1990’s, is always felt at The Yellowstone. A warm, compassionate, but also tough mama, she was the glue that kept the whole Dutton shebang together. Her premature death throws The Dutton Family for a loop, continually causing them to individually and collectively reckon with what their lives could have and would have looked like if she was still around.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Kayce Dutton 15

“You'll never meet a man who's killed more men than me, but I ain't never murdered one and never will.”

- Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes)

KAYCE DUTTON

The youngest Dutton child, former US Navy SEAL Kayce, was also first Dutton family outcast. Kayce returns to The Yellowstone at the beginning of the series after a years-long absence, the result of his father’s disapproval of his marriage to Broken Rock Reservation member Monica Long (Kelsey Asbille). As the series progresses, the PTSD-stricken Kayce, a loving father and faithful husband, slowly rebuilds his extremely damaged relationship with his father, eventually rising in the ranks to become John’s top lieutenant. With the absence of Lee, the eldest Dutton child, it soon becomes obvious to the inhabitants of The Yellowstone that Kayce is destined to inherit the ranch - that is if only he can decide on where his true loyalties ultimately lie, the reservation, his wife’s ancestral home, or the ranch that has been in his family since the 19th century.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Kayce Dutton and his son Tate 16Kayce and his son, Tate.

A brutal enforcer who also happens to have the biggest heart of anyone on the show, Kayce is a fascinating, layered character.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 -Beth Dutton 17

“Just tell me who to fight.”

- Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly)

BETH DUTTON

Despite occasional emotional instability, Beth Dutton is one helluva tough cookie. Not raised to be a cowboy or a ranch hand like her brothers, she’s a brilliant, cunning, dutiful, and ruthless corporate raider who frequently copes with the nihilism that loving and protecting her family can produce with substance abuse and self-destructive behavior. Rip Wheeler, Dutton’s main muscle and Beth’s on-and-off romantic partner, is the only one that can really bring out Beth’s best self.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 -Jamie Dutton 18

JAMIE DUTTON

The second-oldest (and most peculiar) Dutton, Jamie (Wes Bentley) - he’s named after his great-great- grandfather – is at the very least neck-and-neck with Kayce and Beth in terms of being tortured. Though he primarily serves as the family’s lawyer, his political aspirations come into the fold as well as the series progresses.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Beth clashes with Jamie 19Beth clashes with Jamie, the brother she hates.

Unlike the rest of his siblings (who pretty much just have one totally messed up relationship, the one with their father), Jamie has two major dysfunctional relationships in his life – one with his adoptive (!) father and an even more slipshod one with his sister, Beth (it’s a long story).

Though Jamie frequently uses his arrogance as a mask for his crippling insecurity (mainly revolving around his identity as a Dutton), he is also highly intelligent, incredibly sharp (when necessary), and perhaps more capable of force than anyone could have previously imagined.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Rip Wheeler 20

"Be a man about it. Don't scream."

Rip Wheeler

RIP WHEELER

With his marriage to Beth Dutton is Season 4, cowboy Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), the biggest badass on television, is now officially a member of the family (even if he’s basically been a surrogate son to John since he was a teenager).

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 -John Dutton 21

"If you're marrying Beth, you've already proved you're not scared of anything."

- John Dutton

A fighter in every which way, Rip is fiercely loyal to John, who took Rip in as a teenager after Rip killed his own father in order to avenge his mother’s death.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Yellowstone 22Rip and his right-hand man, Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith), a senior ranch hand at The Yellowstone.

Rip doesn’t take you know what from anyone and he’ll brand your chest with The Yellowstone “Y” or take you to the train station before you can bat your eyelashes.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler 23Beth & Rip Forever.

There’s a reason Rip and Beth are standout fan favorites, that’s for sure.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Dave Annable as the late Lee Dutton 24Dave Annable as the late Lee Dutton

LEE DUTTON (DECEASED)

John Dutton’s oldest son, Lee Dutton, is introduced at the beginning of the series as John’s favorite child, his most loyal progeny. When Lee, Head of Security at Yellowstone and Montana Livestock Commission Agent, is killed after a violent confrontation with the Broken Rock Police over a cattle theft, suffice to say a giant vacuum gets formed in The Dutton Family. Gone but not forgotten, Lee’s senseless death is eventually avenged by his brother, Kayce, who may or may not fill his late older brother’s shoes (big shoes to fill, indeed).

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Monica Long Dutton 25

MONICA LONG DUTTON

As Kayce’s wife and mother to the only Dutton grandchild, Tate (Brecken Merrill), Monica is another character who seriously wrestles with the notion of belonging. Though she loves Kayce, her hesitation about being a Dutton, the result of her Broken Rock upbringing and Native American heritage, causes her frequent turmoil.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Tate Dutton 26

TATE DUTTON

John Dutton’s only grandchild, Tate, has been through a lot for a little dude. Countless attempts have been made on his life, he’s been kidnapped - heck, the list just goes on and on. While Tate worships his dad, Kayce (who loves his son more than life itself), his relationship with his grandfather, John, starts off rocky. As the series progresses, however, it becomes more and more evident that the bond between Tate and John is one of the only things keeping John from becoming so hard that he loses his humanity altogether.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Jamie's son 27Jamie and his baby mama, Christina (Katherine Cunningham)

JAMIE’S SON

Though he doesn’t have an official name yet, Jamie’s baby son, his lovechild with former campaign staffer Christina (Katherine Cunningham), is definitely a Dutton.

Or is he?

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Kayce and Monica's Forthcoming baby 28

KAYCE & MONICA’S FORTHCOMING KID

Will the newest Dutton grandchild be a boy or a girl? Only time will tell.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Yellowstone Carter 29

CARTER

Though he’s not officially a Dutton, Carter (Fin Little), essentially becomes Beth and Rip’s adopted son after Beth decides to take Carter in (after his father dies of an overdose). As it was for his surrogate father, Rip Wheeler, Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is where Carter will learn how to become a man.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - James Dutton 30James Dutton (Tim McGraw), John Dutton’s great-great-grandfather

THE EXTENDED DUTTON FAMILY TREE

The Dutton family tree hardly stops with Yellowstone. The success of Yellowstone has led to Taylor Sheridan scoring a $200 million production deal, a pact that has already culminated in Yellowstone Wild West prequel spinoff 1883 scoring the largest cable premiere since 2015.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Faith Hill 31Faith Hill as John Dutton’s great-great-grandmother Margaret Dutton

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Sam Elliott 32Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) may not be a Dutton in 1883, but, you know…Sam Elliott.

We’ll get into the larger Dutton family tree down the line, but just know that the history of The Dutton dynasty is no joke.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Governor Lynelle Perry 33 Could Montana Governor Lynelle Perry (Wendy Moniz), John’s on-and-off love interest, become a Dutton in Season 5? Hey, only time will tell.

THE FUTURE OF YELLOWSTONE

Still not enough Yellowstone for you? Don’t worry. Prequels and spinoffs like 1932 (which will follow The Dutton Family during Western Expansion, Prohibition, and The Great Depression) and 6666 (set at the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas, which Taylor Sheridan recently purchased for a cool $192 million dollars) are already in the works.

Learn more about what’s coming soon from Taylor Sheridan, the hardest-working man in the business, right HERE and HERE.

In the meantime, we’ll be looking out for the fifth season of Yellowstone, which will be split into two installments of seven episodes each.

Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree 20220406 - Yellowstone 34“If you crazy kids want even a snowball’s chance in hell at inheriting The Yellowstone, I reckon you start getting real comfortable with the fire everyday carry and everyday living goodies being served up by Gallantry these days.”
- John Dutton, probably
