“No matter what happened to you in your past, you are not your past, you are the resources and the capabilities you gain from it… That is the basis for all change.”
Martin Scorsese’s 2013 bro opus The Wolf of Wall Street (watch the trailer HERE) is one of the best movies ever made, a darkly humorous (watch Jordan’s father, Max, lose his mind over an American Express bill in Wolf HERE) and entertaining tour de force that leaves you breathless for every second of its nearly three hour running time.
The biggest challenge was making Jordan not necessarily likable—I knew he would be compelling and funny—but a character that you actually wanted to spend three hours with. I wanted the audience to be seduced by these guys.
- Wolf Screenwriter Terence Winter, MovieMaker Magazine
While many characters in the film had their names changed from their real-life counterparts or are merely amalgamations of several people, Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie), the story’s central protagonist is true to life in far more than name.
Yes, the film is a lightning rod, so to speak. Whether our intentions were to cause a sensation, I don't know about that… It's profane and obscene also, so I think why not just do it? Why not just show it and maybe provoke it to the point where you take the audience into that mindset and actually, at times, find it funny? This is the sharp edge of the picture, in a way. Yes, it is funny, but I've always said that it's not funny.
- Martin Scorsese, Movieweb
Let’s peel back the curtain on the man behind the man, the real “Wolf” of Wall Street, Jordan Ross Belfort.
I don't think [Belfort] set out to be a master criminal. He was an ambitious kid from Queens who wanted to be rich, and little by little he kept crossing lines that he'd draw for himself in the sand. Throw lots of Quaaludes and rationalization into that mix, and you're going to end up going down the rabbit hole.
- Terence Winter, Esquire
THE REAL JORDAN BELFORT: THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM
American entrepreneur, speaker, author, former stockbroker (and, yes, convicted felon) Jordan Ross Belfort was born in the Bronx borough of New York City and raised in Bayside, Queens.
A natural-born hustler, Belfort actually originally planned to become a Dentist, but he dropped out of The University of Maryland School of Dentistry as soon as the Dean told him that “The golden age of dentistry is over.” Belfort became a door-to-door meat and seafood salesman on Long Island, but when that business went kaput, Belfort was forced to file for bankruptcy at the ripe old age of 25.
Eager to start making some cold, hard cash, Jordan, with the help of a family friend, landed a job as a trainee stockbroker at L.F. Rothschild. Unfortunately, however, the gig didn’t last long. Following the Black Monday stock market crash of 1987, Belfort was laid off immediately.
“Whip their necks off, don't let ‘em off the phone.”
STRATTON OAKMONT
For Belfort, enough was enough already. Something had to give.
Upon learning that a stockbroker could receive a 50% commission for every penny stock that he or she sold (watch the Aerotyne phone sale scene in Wolf HERE), Belfort founded over-the-counter brokerage house Stratton Oakmont (which also served as the inspiration for the 2000 movie Boiler Room) in 1989 and began recruiting his pals (watch it HERE) to work for him immediately.
The “pump and dump” securities fraud scheme was how Stratton Oakmont raked in the cash from the jump. Stratton brokers would gain the trust of unsuspecting investors by selling penny stocks for no-name companies listed on pink sheets with low costs and a guaranteed financial return, in turn pumping up the value of these companies stock prices. After seeing the returns on their investment, investors, who now trusted their brokers, would proceed to buy even more artificially overvalued stocks from them, eager to make an even bigger profit. Brokers would then sell all of their shares, causing the stock prices to fall, a practice that left investors high, dry, and holding the bag while the aforementioned brokers raked in tons of dough.
“I was the most talented salesman in the world. My mistake was that I’d picked the wrong product to sell.”
- Jordan Belfort, Catching The Wolf of Wall Street
During the Stratton Oakmont years, Belfort lived a sex, drugs, and rock & roll lifestyle that had to be seen in order to truly be believed. At Stratton’s peak, Belfort employed over a thousand brokers (with stocks worth more than a billion dollars) and even managed to reel in footwear maven Steve Madden for his company’s initial IPO.
The good times didn’t last forever.
“My only regret is that I lost people money. Everything else, that’s my life.”
- Jordan Belfort, Red Bull
THE WOLF CRASHES & BURNS
Stratton Oakmont had been closely scrutinized by the NASD (The National Association of Securities Dealers, the organization that expelled Stratton in 1996 and put it out of business) for its method of stock manipulation almost from its very inception. As the company’s wealth and notoriety grew, its shady trading practices, including its handling of Steve Madden initial public offering in 1993, eventually caught the attention of the SEC, too.
A lengthy investigation conducted by SEC led to charges being placed against Belfort and Stratton Oakmont (which was accused of manipulating the IPOs of at least 34 companies), but ultimately a settlement was reached. Banned from running a brokerage firm (watch Belfort’s “I’m not leaving” scene in Wolf HERE), Belfort sold all of his shares to business partner, friend, and general right-hand man Daniel Porush.
For Belfort, it marked the beginning of the end.
Jean-Jacques Saurel (Jean Dujardin), Belfort’s Swiss banker, gets pinched.
Following his SEC settlement, Belfort not only learned that he was also under investigation by the FBI for securities fraud and money laundering, but also that both his Swiss Banker (check one of the bankers scenes in Wolf HERE) and a fellow associate were cooperating with the feds as the feds built a case against him.
“It was awful what I did, but I was on massive amounts of drugs.”
- Jordan Belfort, The Hollywood Reporter
Terrified by the prospect of a jail time, Belfort became even more paranoid, spiraling further and further out of control with his hard use of cocaine, Quaaludes, and more. Eventually, the inevitable transpired and Belfort was arrested at his home (watch the scene where he gets caught HERE) for money laundering and securities fraud.
I suffered from a disease called ‘more’… No matter how much I had, I wanted more. You don't lose your ethics all at once. It happens very slowly and, almost imperceptibly, you know you're doing things right and one day you step over the line.
- Jordan Belfort, Business Insider
To avoid heavy jail time, Belfort cooperated with the Feds (including Agent Coleman, the FBI Special Agent who had built the case against him) and agreed to wear a wire in order to help build additional cases against his partners and associates.
[The world was] smaller, a pre-internet age – you only knew what you saw on the news. I wasn’t born rich; I thought I should act the way characters in movies did. ‘Rich’ was Dallas, Dynasty, Gordon Gekko. It’s different to what kids value now – everything’s Instagram.
- Jordan Belfort, Red Bull
After being indicted and pleading guilty to fraud in 1999, Belfort was sentenced to 4 years in prison (he ultimately served only 22 months) and ordered to pay restitution back to the investors that he had swindled.
Watch Jordan introduce DiCaprio’s celebrated motivational speaker Belfort at a Straight Line Sales seminar in The Wolf of Wall Street HERE.
SCORSESE & LEO TAKE A CRACK AT THE WOLF
While serving his sentence at the low-security Taft Correctional Institution in California, Belfort shared a cell with Tommy Chong (yes, that Tommy Chong). Hearing Belfort’s wild stories prompted Chong to encourage Belfort to write about his experiences.
“[Tommy Chong] gave me one piece of advice: if you’re going to write about your life, choose the craziest and the saddest parts – no one wants to read about the mundane.”
- Jordan Belfort, Red Bull
Belfort listened to Chong and got to work. His writings would soon become the basis for two books, The Wolf of Wall Street (buy it HERE), which was published in 2007, and Catching The Wolf of Wall Street (buy it HERE), which was published in 2009.
Belfort’s story soon caught the attention of Warner Bros., Leonardo DiCaprio, and Martin Scorsese, and The Wolf of Wall Street book rights were secured from Bantam Books even before its publication. Though production delays lasted for years, DiCaprio and Scorsese eventually got the project off the ground with an independent production company (read more about that HERE, HERE, and HERE, as that story could be another movie by itself).
[Belfort was] incredibly open about his life, especially the most embarrassing parts… I interviewed him incessantly and tried to pull out every detail I possibly could. We incorporated a lot of other stories that weren’t even in the book into the movie.
- Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wall Street Journal
In August 2012, filming for The Wolf of Wall Street in New York City finally commenced, and the movie was released in theaters on December 25, 2013.
“I’m very much of the opinion that art should ask questions and not give answers, so I’m just laying it out there, telling the story of this guy without judging it, and letting you take away from it what you will.”
- Terence Winter, MTV
A massive commercial success (it grossed nearly $400 million worldwide), the balls-to-the-wall, debauchery-filled cautionary tale and ode to excess that is Wolf would go on to become the highest-grossing movie of Scorsese’s career.
When I started to do the research I talked to the FBI agent that arrested Jordan and he said, ‘I will tell you that I tracked this guy for ten years and every single thing in that book is true.’ I said, ‘That's pretty unbelievable.’ Mainly I'm thinking nobody could do this amount of drugs for that length of time and come out of the other end of this and survive. The series of coincidences that happened in Jordan's life - you're going, ‘Okay, come on you're kidding me. The yacht crashed and the plane sent over to kill you, that crashed too?’ Absolutely happened, the real stuff. Just one thing after another.
- Terence Winter, Collider
FACT VS. FICTION IN THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
In both the book and movie version of The Wolf of Wall Street, you are, as Terence Winter told Slate, “being sold the Jordan Belfort story by Jordan Belfort, and he is a very unreliable narrator.” Nevertheless, while many aspects of the movie are of course embellished for dramatic purposes, much of it is quite historically accurate.
Let’s attempt to bifurcate some fact from fiction, shall we?
“These little bastards were so strong, I discovered a whole new phase. The cerebral palsy phase.”
- Jordan Belfort, The Wolf of Wall Street
FACT: Belfort, who is now sober, definitely knew his way around cocaine, Quaaludes (Lemmon 714s, specifically – watch the scene HERE), and other drugs in the 80’s and 90’s, and the habit did result in him crashing both his car and his helicopter.
FICTION: In real-life, Belfort crashed a Mercedes, not a white Lamborghini.
FACT: Belfort did work at L.F. Rothschild, but got laid off after Black Monday.
FACT: Belfort really did open up Stratton Oakmont, a franchise of Stratton Securities (which he later bought out) in his friend’s Queens garage.
It was just like coke, coke, coke all day and I was like, ‘Screw you I don't have a problem’… I was like Al Pacino in ‘Scarface’ with a pile of cocaine. That's what my life had descended to.
- Jordan Belfort, Business Insider
FACT: Belfort and his co-workers really did engage in seemingly endless wild drug-and-hooker fueled escapades. In fact, according to Belfort, he was regularly using 22 different drugs by the end of his career as a stockbroker.
FACT: Belfort really did have to be rescued by the Italian Navy after his 167-foot yacht (named “The Nadine”, after his wife), which was once owned by Coco Chanel, capsized.
FACT: Of course, Belfort did go to jail for the pump-and-dump schemes that fueled his over-the-top lifestyle (prostitutes really did get billed to the corporate card before being written off in taxes and there really were midgets, though, according to Belfort, they never got tossed - they just served hors d'oeuvres around the office) and continues to pay off his debt to this day.
FICTION: There were never any animals in the Stratton Oakmont office and no one actually called Belfort “The Wolf” during his reign (he just like how it sounded when he was writing his book).
Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey) is a real dude.
FACT: Not only was Belfort’s boss at L.F. Rothschild actually named Mark Hanna, but the real-life Mark Hanna has since admitted that he did in fact tell Belfort that the keys to success as a stockbroker are cocaine, masturbation, and hookers (watch him tell his own story HERE and HERE, and watch McConaughey’s scene-stealing performance HERE).
FICTION: The chest thumping in the movie is actually just McConaughey’s pre-filming warm-up ritual (read more HERE). When Scorsese saw McConaughey doing his thing on set, he asked him to incorporate it into the scene, and the rest is history.
“The book... is a distant relative of the truth, and the film is a distant relative of the book. [Also,] there was never a chimpanzee in the office.”
- Danny Porush, Mother Jones
FACT/FICTION: The real-life Donnie Azoff (played by Jonah Hill in the movie) is actually an amalgamation of several people. However, he is largely based on Danny Porush, Belfort’s right-hand man at Stratton Oakmont. Like Azoff in the movie, Porush was really married to his own first cousin (watch the scene where Jordan learns that Donnie is married to his own cousin HERE), lived in the same building as Belfort when the two first met, was an actual childhood friend of Steve Madden, and, yes, he really did once actually eat a live goldfish belonging to a Stratton employee.
Danny Porush and Jordan Belfort in simpler times.
FICTION: As Jordan Belfort told the crew over at the FULL SEND podcast, “Danny got a bad wrap for that. In the movie it was Donnie – in the movie Danny – that rats me out but in real life it was other people.”
"I tell you what. You show me a pay stub with $72,000 on it and I quit my job right now and I'll work for you."
- Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill), The Wolf of Wall Street
FICTION: The classic diner scene wherein Belfort first meets Donnie Azoff (watch it HERE) is completely fabricated. In real life, Porush was introduced to Belfort through Belfort’s first wife, Denise (her name is Teresa in the movie), who shared a morning bus commute with Porush.
Teresa Petrillo (Cristin Milioti), Jordan’s first wife in The Wolf of Wall Street.
FACT: Porush really did come home and tell his wife that he was going to quit his job and take the Series 7 exam in order to get his stockbroker’s license immediately after meeting Belfort.
Jordan talks with Aunt Emma (Joanna Lumley) in Wolf.
FACT: Belfort did use his in-laws, as well as his wife’s English Aunt Patricia, to launder his money into Swiss banks.
Naomi (Margot Robbie), The Duchess of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn (named this because she was born in England), Belfort’s second wife in Wolf.
FACT: Though Naomi’s real name is Nadine, Belfort did really meet his second wife at a Stratton party while she was working as a model. The fights, the infamous video camera scene, Jordan’s high antics – all true (at least, you know, according to Belfort).
Steve Madden (Jake Hoffman) gets ready to address the wolves of Stratton.
FACT: Stratton Oakmont took Steve Madden public and gave a speech to all Oakmont brokers the day (the day Belfort made $23 million in 2 hours) of the IPO. Though the movie only showed Belfort going to prison in large part due to his involvement with dramatically driving up the Madden stock, Belfort, Porush, and Madden (who ended up serving 30 months of a 41-month sentence for stock fraud, more on that HERE) all owned most of the company’s stock, and both Porush and Madden also went to jail.
Brad Bodnick (Jon Bernthal) gets nipped.
FACT: One of Belfort’s best friends, Todd Garrett, was also his Quaalude dealer (he purportedly sold Belfort at least 10,000).
Watch the hilarious showdown between Brad and Donnie in The Wolf of Wall Street HERE.
FACT: Like his Wolf counterpart, FBI Special Agent Patrick Denham (Kyle Chandler), no-nonsense real-life FBI Special Agent Gregory Coleman began to build his case against Belfort in 1992 after the FBI created a task force in order to investigate securities fraud. In 1998, Coleman nabbed Belfort and got him to flip on many of his cohorts in order to get a reduced sentence at a minimum-security federal prison.
“From a moral perspective, [Belfort] was a reprehensible human being. Admiration would be the wrong word, but from the perspective of manipulating the market, he’s one of the best there is.”
- Greg Coleman, Vulture
FICTION: Coleman and Belfort never met on Belfort’s yacht (watch the scene HERE) and Belfort never got arrested while filming an infomercial.
Watch Jordan’s interview with the man who eventually sent him to jail, Agent Greg Coleman, HERE!
[Jordan] certainly didn’t start out as a master criminal or with the ambition of robbing people and going to jail, he was an ambitious kid from Queens who wanted to be successful and then started to get involved with shady activities. He said many times that he tried to draw these lines in the sand and tell himself the things that he would never do, and then he found himself crossing the next one and the next one and doing drugs to numb myself to what I was doing and the next thing I knew I was in over my head and I didn’t know how I got there. So he started donating money to charity, or telling himself that “these people are greedy, too, and you can’t cheat an honest man”, and all the s**t that you tell yourself to make yourself look better. ‘If I’m not gonna rob you, someone else will.’ All this twisted logic. But I think probably by the end of the movie, and certainly the Jordan I know now, says he doesn’t feel that way anymore, and I believe him.
- Terence Winter, MTV
WHAT’S JORDAN UP TO NOW?
These days, Jordan “The Wolf of Wall Street” Belfort is thankfully using his natural talents and abilities in a far more productive (and legal) manner.
When I was young, I didn’t use that power responsibly. As an older – hopefully wiser – man, it’s important that my message, grounded in ethics and integrity, brings value to people. Used benignly, it’s a wonderful thing.
- Jordan Belfort, Red Bull
He’s delivering motivational speeches about sales, public speaking, negotiating, and entrepreneurship around the world (watch the “buy or die” inspirational speech that Belfort gives to his employees in Wolf HERE).
He’s teaching his ethical Straight Line System of selling via his “Straight Line Persuasion” program (learn more HERE).

He’s continuing to write books (check out Way of the Wolf: Straight Line Selling: Master the Art of Persuasion, Influence, and Success HERE).
“You have four seconds to establish three crucial things — you’re (1) sharp as a tack (2) enthusiastic and (3) an expert in your field — or they tune out.”
- Jordan Belfort, The Hollywood Reporter
He’s talking to the biggest celebrities, entrepreneurs, scientists, and anyone else that grabs his attention about overcoming challenges, useful business advice, and much, much more on “The Wolf’s Den” (listen HERE).
I’ll give you three tidbits. One, delay your gratification – good things take time. Two, you can’t be half-pregnant when it comes to integrity; either you’re ethical or not, because your line starts to move. And three, learn to communicate and influence; it’s a skill that will change your life.
- Jordan Belfort, Red Bull
He’s teaching free classes via his “Sales School 101” podcast (check it out HERE and subscribe to Belfort’s YouTube channel HERE).
In recent years, Belfort has even lauded the GameStop revolt and reinvented himself as a cryptocurrency guru.
Needless to say, Belfort, clean and sober for nearly 2 decades, continues to work overtime to inspire action and fulfill the ultimate redemption story about second chances.
I think that America is forgiving of failure, but the people are not as forgiving of themselves. If you fail in America, it's a big blow... If you're not truly of the entrepreneurial mentality, failure can cripple you. It comes down to the attitude. The problem is that when you take a fall, you develop tremendous limiting beliefs. I've been there and these beliefs really can cripple you. So much is about beliefs; not many people get the fact our capabilities are a function of our beliefs. It's not that America gives people a second chance; no one gives you anything, you have to go out there and take it for yourself. Opportunities are always there, for anybody, but if you don't go out and get them, it doesn't matter.
- Jordan Belfort, The Australian

I try not to judge. As a writer, I've tried to avoid strong opinions about morality. You just want to present things as they are and let the viewer come to their own conclusion. But I guess for me personally, none of it sounds all that good. When I was writing for The Sopranos, people used to say, ‘Oh, you're glorifying this lifestyle. You're making it look glamorous.’ But that never made sense to me. Nothing about Tony Soprano's life was glamorous. He was never somebody I wanted to be. His life was terrible. He couldn't trust anybody, any one of his friends could've put a bullet in his head, and his wife and kids hated him. I'd rather be the guy with the well-paying job who came home and could relax because nobody's trying to kill him.
