Seann William Scott has polished Stifler into a character who is on the edge of becoming a verb, as in ‘he stiflered the whole crowd.’ Proud possessor of a gigantic ego, able to conceive and stage-manage appalling scenarios, incapable of understanding why he is not universally loved, Stifler is, we all secretly know, the character in this movie we like the best.
- Roger Ebert, 2003
Seann William Scott is one of the most prolific working actors around. His movies, which include Final Destination, Road Trip, Dude, Where’s My Car, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Super Troopers, Old School, The Rundown, The Dukes of Hazzard, Role Models, Goon, and more have earned a whopping $4.91 billion at the global box office.
People think that I’m that guy. They think that I’m Stifler… In the beginning of my career I was like ‘Well, you know, I’m not really that fictional character, you know.’ You could see like certain guys, like kind of frat guys that pretty much allowed me to have a career, when they would come up to me like ‘Stifler!’ and when I was like ‘Not really,’ it was breaking their hearts… I understood then that I can’t do that to them, so now I’m like ‘Yeah, I’m Stifler. I’m that guy.’
- Seann William Scott on Conan (2019)
As any Gallantry Man will tell you, however, it is Scott’s career-defining role as the most loveable blowhard a-hole ever, the rowdy, outrageous, profane, and, of course, absolutely hilarious Steven “Steve” Stifler in the American Pie movies, that solidifies his Gallantry Man Legend status. Considering that the American Pie movies grossed nearly a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, it’s safe to say we’re not alone in sharing this sentiment.
I just got so lucky… I was just always hoping that I could be in movies, I never thought about playing a character that people would remember. So, for me, it was like a dream come true. I never get frustrated when people bring it up to me. That was the most fun character you could ever play in a comedy, why would I ever get frustrated with that? I wouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t have a career if it wasn’t for that movie and that character, so I love it.
- Seann William Scott, Entertainment Weekly
The bottom line is that Stifler is a character that many of us remember, cherish, and hope to see come to life again in the future.
So put your party hat on, pound some fists, and get ready to shotgun some cold ones, because it’s time to take a look back at the history of The Stifmeister...
[Stifler] was such a fun character to play. At the beginning of my career, that genre of films of R-rated crazy comedies were doing really well, so as much as I wanted to maybe do something more dramatic or serious, I was like, this character is much more fun to play than the boring straight guy.
- Seann William Scott, People
AMERICAN PIE (1999): A LEGEND IS BORN
Made on a relatively tight budget (for its time) of $11,000,000, American Pie, which follows four teenage boys entering a pact to get some tushie by prom night, grossed $235,483,004 worldwide ($102,561,004 domestic, $132,922,000 international) and an additional $109,577,352 worldwide in home video rentals.
The stars of the original American Pie (1999)
No one involved in the first American Pie could have imagined that the comedy classic would go on to become more than just a pop culture phenomenon, but a defining film for a generation. Even more surprising (at least to those initially involved), however, was the fact that the supporting character of Stifler, played by Scott, would become the breakout star and fan-favorite of the Pie universe.
“I’ll see you guys tonight, in the “No F****** Section”, right?”
Though he isn’t one of the four main leads in American Pie, Stifler serves the story of Pie in a major way as a supporting character. Is Stifler a cocky, arrogant, vulgar, immature, obnoxious, hard partying, womanizing smartass lacrosse player, a quasi-antagonist that ends up managing to alienate nearly all of his friends by the movie’s conclusion? Sure.
“S***brick? Mom?!”
However, in a performance that speaks volumes to his abilities as a Gallantry Man Legend, Scott takes what could have easily been just a crass one-note character and makes him incredibly endearing. It’s an incredible feat, really.
Watch Stifler drink the pale ale HERE.
Despite being paid a meager $8,000 for his role in Pie, Scott would soon see a massive return on his investment, reprising his role as The Stifmeister in all three sequels.
“Oh, yeah! The Stifmeister is coming back to Grand Harbor! Deck the halls, bye-bye Great Falls, wipe my ass and lick my balls! It’s Stifler time, baby! Whoo-hoo-hoo!”
AMERICAN PIE 2 (2001): THE PARTY CONTINUES
The success of American Pie led to big things for its breakout star and Scott managed to fit in starring in Bro Comedy Godfather Todd Phillips’ Road Trip before returning for the inevitable American Pie 2.
“I'm Steve Stifler and I have an 11 inch penis.... AROUND!"
“I got peed on.”
Made a budget of $30,000,000, American Pie 2 (2001), the sequel that follows Jim, Stifler, and the rest of the gang at their Lake Michigan beach house they rent during their first college summer break (watch Stifler and the boys make their grand entrance HERE), grossed $287,553,595 worldwide ($145,103,595 domestic, $142,450,000 international).
“Finch, fist yourself!”
Suffice to say, the growing legend of Stifler showed no signs of slowing down.
Despite some turbulent moments, Stifler succeeds on his own terms at the conclusion of American Pie 2.

AMERICAN WEDDING (2003): STIFLER, THE HERO
By 2003, the results were in. Audiences wanted even more Stifler. With American Wedding, that’s exactly what they got.
“Here, let me help you out there. You keep fighting the good fight, Sir!”
- “Gentleman Steve” (Stifler’s alter-ego)
In Wedding, Stifler officially becomes the hero (watch Stifler get entrusted with Jim’s ring HERE) of the franchise.
Made on a budget of $55,000,000, American Wedding (2003) follows the wedding of Jim and Michelle amidst complications that arise via the arrival of Stifler (watch Stifler crash the wedding party HERE) and Michelle’s little sister, Cadence (January Jones).
“F****** right, doggie!”
[Stifler] is so incurably optimistic in the face of the crushing handicap of being himself. When he loses the wedding ring and the dog eats it and he retrieves it in what, you realize after a moment's thought, is the only way possible, what he does to keep his secret from the new mother-in-law (Deborah Rush) is simultaneously noble and nauseating.
– Roger Ebert, 2003
The movie grossed $232,722,935 worldwide ($104,565,114 domestic, $128,157,821 international).
“I'm gonna be like, "You like this s***, Momma?" And then she'll be like, "F*****' right doggie. Suck on my nipples like, like you're milkin' a cow!"

Watch Stifler’s absolutely classic return in American Reunion HERE.
‘American Reunion’ has a sense of deja vu, but it still delivers a lot of nice laughs. Most of them for me came thanks to Stifler. Seann William Scott, who has a respectable career otherwise, has made the role of Stifler his own, and seems able to morph his face into an entirely new person: narrowed eyes, broad maniacal grin, frightening focus, still with all the zeal for seduction and adventure he had in high school. The ingenuity with which he destroys the jet skis of two jerks can only be admired.
- Roger Ebert, “The Stiffmeister Rises Again” (2012)
AMERICAN REUNION : THE RETURN OF STIFLER
By 2012, the void felt by the absence of The Stifmeister for nine whole years had become unbearable.
Thankfully, however, the whole gang agreed to return for American Reunion.
For Scott, this endeavor would prove to be particularly lucrative. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal paid him a robust $5 million, plus a small slice of first-dollar gross, to reprise his Gallantry Man Legend role. Talk about a raise from the original $8,000 Scott received for American Pie (if you ask us, Scott got lowballed – we’re talking about one of the greatest characters of all-time here, folks), right?
Made on a budget of $50,000,000, American Reunion, which follows Jim, Michelle, Stifler, and their friends as they reunite in East Great Falls, Michigan for their high school reunion, grossed $234,989,584 worldwide ($57,011,521 domestic, $177,978,063 worldwide).
Here are just some of The Stifmeister’s classic moments in Reunion…

Dude, how the hell do you even think you're getting married? I've been looking out for your sex life since high school… The first tits this guy ever saw were because of me. The first girl he ever hooked up with was at my party at my cottage. That girl is the girl he's marrying. The Stif-man showed him the way. Can I get a 'Hallelujah'?… But this mofo right here does not want the Stifmeister, the grand f****** facilitator to attend the wedding. Who sucks donkey d***?
- Stifler, American Wedding
QUOTING THE STIFMEISTER: A GALLANTRY MAN TRADITION
Gallantry Man Legends love to quote The Stifmeister.
“I love the Twilight books. New Moon is my favorite.”
“Mine, too!”
Whether you’re shooting the poop about the hottest new everyday carry that you just bought from Gallantry, playing beer pong, or just reminding everyone of your Legend status, dropping the proven commodity that is a crowd-pleasing Stifler's line from one of the American Pie flicks will immediately validate your Gallantry Man Legend credentials and remind everyone that your awesomeness levels are never to be questioned. Ever.
“Oh my God! It’s like… we have so much in common!”

Thomas Ian Nicholas, Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott a.k.a. The Stifmeister, Chris Klein, and Eddie Kaye Thomas in American Reunion (2012).
I did four American Pies… Very quickly, I realized that it was such a gift to be able to make people laugh. I would do [a fifth]. I think seeing Stifler in his 40s as the exact same guy, just not growing up at all seems even funnier to me.”
- Seann William Scott, People
IS THERE A FUTURE FOR THE STIFMEISTER?
America needs fun right now, and, truth be told, nobody brings the fun like The Stifmeister.
Not to be overdramatic, but there’s even an argument to made that the future of America hangs in the balance and that the x-factor here is whether or not we ever get to see Seann William Scott return to play Stifler once (twice, maybe even three times… you get gist) more.
Though there have been murmurs - American Pie 5 was announced on August 4, 2012, and Tara Reid insisted that American Pie 5 will happen back in 2018 – nothing has come to fruition.
Scott as Stifler, we mean E.L., in Todd Phillips’ Road Trip (2000)
Let’s get real, though. We all know why Pie 5 hasn’t happened yet. It’s like Todd Phillips, Scott’s Road Trip and Old School director, exclaimed to Vanity Fair in 2019:
Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture… There were articles written about why comedies don’t work anymore — I’ll tell you why, because all the f****** funny guys are like, ‘F*** this s***.’… It’s hard to argue with 30 million people on Twitter. You just can’t do it, right? So you just go, ‘I’m out.’ I’m out, and you know what? With all my comedies — I think that what comedies, in general, all have in common — is they’re irreverent.
Thankfully, Scott understands how dire the stakes are and how pivotal of a role he plays in potentially reversing the madness. In a recent interview, Scott affirmed that he believes seeing how Stifler would thrive in this day and age when everybody is trying to be so PC would actually be even more hilarious (we agree, obviously), saying:
Well, that’s the fun thing. I talked to the filmmakers, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who directed the fourth one, American Reunion, and we actually were like, ‘It’d be really interesting because it’s such a different time now to make that adjustment. It might be even funnier.’ because you have to be more careful and it’s like, how would a guy like Stifler behave now knowing that it’s not acceptable to say the crazy shit they used to say? How does that affect him? I think it’d be a lot of fun.’
‘A lot of fun’ indeed.
LET’S GO!
“I say, why don't you guys locate The Stifmeister’s EDC collection from Gallantry, remove the shrink wrap, and *use* those everyday carry items!”
- Stifler (Seann William Scott), probably, American Pie
BEHOLD THE STIFMEISTER!
STIFLER’S EDC COLLECTION
Hold yourself over until Stifler returns with the fresh everyday carry items – a bottle opener for beers, a notebook wallet for pulling chicks numbers at the bar, and a watch to be on time for lax practice - that Stifler himself would absolutely be everyday carrying with him these days.
“What are you doing without a Handgrey Bauhaus MO.25 Titanium Bottle Opener from Gallantry, Jim? Seriously, man. You’re embarrassing yourself!”
THE BAUHAUS MO.25 TITANIUM BOTTLE OPENER FROM HANDGREY
Staatliches Bauhaus was a German art school that focused on the principle that objects should serve society and that there should be no distinction between form and function.
Handgrey modeled their Bauhaus collection after these principals.
The MO.25 is the smallest M-series bottle opener made by Handgrey, though don’t for a second think that its minuscule stature sacrifices functionality in any way.
If you need a bottle opener that won't crowd your keychain, but one that is still tough enough to get the job done, this one's for you.
In other words, The Stifmeister would most definitely approve!
