Ah, yes. The 1990’s (you can order Chuck Klosterman’s new book chronicling the period HERE) were an absolutely glorious decade, a glorious time when nothing was less cool than caring.

The last decade of the century was also perhaps the last one with its own signature culture and aesthetic, one that was truly unique to the decade. It was, quite literally, another century. Most notably, though Internet memes didn’t exist yet, it was a time when all the cool kids had one common frame of reference - Actor/Comedian/Producer/Musician Adam “The Sandman” Sandler.

We knew all the jokes.

We knew all the classic catchphrases.

We knew all the hilarious and gibberish-filled tirades, noises, and sounds.

There’s no doubt about it. Adam Sandler’s early comedies epitomized a simpler time when everyone laughed at the same thing without worrying about being caught and tried in the court of public opinion for it.

While there have definitely been some gems (even some Uncut Gems) in recent times (You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, anyone?), there’s no getting around the fact that the early Adam Sandler movies –Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, and The Waterboy - are, by and large, the best Adam Sandler movies.

Let’s celebrate the Gallantry Man Legend known as The Sandman by taking a trip down memory lane with some of the classics, shall we?

Sandler’s first huge blockbuster, Billy Madison, remains one of the most quotable movie ever made. As the juvenile 27-year old title character that stands to inherit his insanely wealthy hotel tycoon father’s empire, Sandler absolutely crushes it.

The setup for Madison involves Billy having to prove to his father that he has what it takes to run the family business by making it through all 12 grades, 2 weeks per grade, all over again. It’s an absolute exercise in sheer absurdity, which only serves to make the movie even more incredible with age.

THE WATERBOY (1998)

Let’s get real. Nobody, maybe outside of Gary Oldman (seriously!), does anger like The Sandman. It’s why American Sports Comedy classic The Waterboy (watch the trailer HERE) works so well. It organically taps into Sandler’s natural ability to turn up by giving Sandler a truly unique character to play, and boy does Sandler do this one justice.

Bobby Boucher, the waterboy for a struggling college football team, is a simple man. His primary joy in life comes from hydrating those around him, delivering them water during those times of need. When Coach Klein (Henry Winkler) discovers Boucher’s hidden rage, he helps Boucher channel it on the field, helping Boucher to transform into a bone-crushing monster in the endzone.

Needless to say, hilarious hijinks ensue.

When revisiting The Waterboy, we couldn’t help but think “Gee, Bobby Boucher really could’ve used an Easy Fill Wide Mouth Flask from Stanley in this”, especially as a way for Boucher to store the water from a glacier in Alaska that was blessed by an Eskimo Medicine Man (“It’s always cold. That’s why it’s so special.”).

STREAMING THAT SANDLER EDC

While the early Sandler classics aren’t available to stream (for free, at least) on the big streaming platforms, we definitely recommend checking out Sandler’s underrated 2016 buddy Action Comedy The Do-Over (watch the trailer HERE) on Netflix. If this one had been released in theaters, it definitely would have been rated R (and we like that, we like that a lot). It’s an absolute blast to watch Sandler in his element as an exhausted FBI agent that tricks his bank manager buddy (played by Spade) into faking his own death after the two old friends reconnect at their 25^th High School Reunion.

So if you’re looking for a fun comedy instead of the Afterschool Special sleeping pills that Hollywood is churning out these days, definitely give The Do-Over a chance right HERE!
